Preferred Output ranking/list instead of one preferred device?

I use the program always and I keep my headphones as my preferred output, so when I plug them in it switches to them. But, since I only have one preferred output, when I turn my computer on it always goes first to the Oculus Virtual Headphones and I have to manually switch the output, or when I plug my laptop into my TV I have to manually switch. A preferred output ranking would be really nice, such that you can specify which device is #1, #2, etc. and FX Sounds would automatically default to the highest ranked device when a device is plugged in, or, if the device that is set as the current output is unplugged, then FX Sounds would switch to the highest ranked device.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Any update on this one @James? I came to make the same request as I don’t see this as a feature yet. I love FxSound and this would make it perfect for folks working with multiple devices.

Here is my situation shared from a different thread:

I have a laptop with wired connected speakers, and use up to 3 different bluetooth devices depending on the situation (not all at once). One for client calls, one for clear music listening, and one is earphones for when I travel for business.

Right now i have my Preferred Output set to “Newly connected output device” which will switch to the bluetooth device once i connect it. This is what I want in this case, however the issue is once I disconnect the bluetooth device it will default to my laptop’s built-in speakers which is not ideal because I leave it closed while I work with desk monitors. I would rather it switch to my second priority device which would be the external speakers , then have the laptop speakers as a last resort/priority.

The envisioned solution would be the ability to setup a output priority list (+ accompanying EQ setting as I’ve configured each) so that if i disconnect a device it will switch to the next one in the list depending on what is detected. If it’s not detected then the next one and so on. In this way and in my scenario, my laptop speakers would be last on the list so that my always-connected external speakers would be selected after I disconnect a bluetooth device.

This feature is implemented. Please install the latest beta version v1.2.9.0.

Thank you @bvijay!

I’ve been using it over the last few weeks and I like the menu to set it up however once i disconnect a bluetooth device (e.g. headphones or headsets), the preferences are not remembered. I.e., once I disconnect the device it disappears from the list, and once I reconnect the same bluetooth headphone, I have to reset what EQ to use and what priority this device sits in. The fact that these two critical things don’t work renders this feature less useful.

To be clear, when I mean disconnect I don’t mean forgetting/unsyncing the device, I just mean powering it off.

Am I thinking incorrectly about the purpose of this feature or is it not working as intended?

Hi @Tooky

Thanks for testing this new feature.

The Bluetooth devices should not get removed from the device preference list when disconnected. Only when the device is removed from the system settings (Bluetooth & devices > Devices), the device should get removed from FxSound Output Device Preference list.

Can you provide some details about your Bluetooth device which gets removed?

Also, try the latest beta version 1.2.10.0. There are some major improvements done in this version on Bluetooth device detection.

Hello @bvijay !

1.2.10.0 is actually the beta version I installed last month. I have not removed any devices since adding them to my system, and the behavior has been inconsistent in regards to saving/keeping the priority list and specific EQ setting. The connected devices (in no specific order):

  • Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones
  • Google Pixel Buds A-Series earphones
  • Jabra Evolve 75 headset
  • Klipsch Promedia Heritage 2.1 speakers (USB connected via Microsoft Surface Dock; shows up as Speakers (Surface Dock))

I’ve since turned off the device priority, but the issue is not that a device gets removed, it’s that the position in the preferences list and EQ selection reset.

The one I’m currently struggling the most with is the Sony headphones.

Hi @Tooky ,

Thank you for sharing these details.

As per the application settings screenshot you have shared, the Jabra Evolve 75 headset is disconnected and Sony WH-1000XM4 is connected. Is that correct?

If you disconnect Sony WH-1000XM4 is it getting removed from the list?

When Sony WH-1000XM4 is disconnected, can you please run fxdiag.exe from %PROGRAMFILES%\FxSound LLC\FxSound and share the status displayed for Sony WH-1000XM4. It will help me diagnose the problem on the inconsistent behaviour on device disconnect.

It shows up twice for some reason (#5 and #14), same as the Jabra headphones (#4 and #12)

@bvijay I powered off my XM4 headphones earlier after a listening session and a Teams call. I powered them on again and after connecting to my system I noticed my output source and EQ didn’t adjust automatically, reflecting the inconsistent behavior I have been alluding to.

Here is what my Output device preference looked like after connecting my headphones again:

Here is the new fxdiag.exe output:

Hi @Tooky

I have found the root cause of the issue. When the Bluetooth headphone is disconnected, the device might switch to an intermittent Not Preset state before switching to Unplugged state. I am working on a fix to avoid the device removal from the preferred device list.

Awesome, that’s fantastic!I look forward to the resolution and appreciate your work and this fantastic application.

@bvijay I’ve not been able to fully test it out yet after installing it a moment ago.

I appear to be experiencing a similar issue that others have reported with the latest beta release (1.2.12.0); the app becomes semi unresponsive. My PC’s CPU and memory usage shoots up when FxSound is enabled and I am occasionally unable to toggle some settings rendering the app unstable.

Unfortunately I am unable to force stop the app as it requires admin privileges on my machine.

Edit, perhaps this GIF can help a bit. I didn’t record sound but when I re-enable FxSound my sound cuts out until I disable the app again.

FxSound 1.2.12.0 beta bug

Hi @Tooky

I see a dummy audio device (speaker icon without any name) which got created during the installation. This is causing the application UI to freeze. At the moment, the solution is to reboot the system. I will release the next version with the fix soon.

The UI responsiveness and no audio issue was due to an invalid empty audio device getting enumerated.

The issue is fixed and I have released v1.2.13.0 as a hot fix.

Please use this version.

On v1.2.11.0 you can reboot the system to remove the invalid device and FxSound will work normally.

The removed or disabled output device will not be automatically removed from preferred output device list now. It can now be manually removed if required through the delete button.
